Terrorist group Al Qaeda kidnapped last Thursday seven workers at a uranium project in Niger, including five French nationals and citizens of Madagascar and Togo. They work at the Arlit uranium prospect, north of the country, an area developed by French state-owned nuclear company Areva. President Nicolas Sarkozy held emergency security talks to decide what measures France would take.
Al Qaeda terrorists aren’t the only threat to uranium mining at the site. The same region hosts attacks by Tuareg groups.
