Do you like to take risks? What about going for iron ore in Afghanistan? Yeah, you read right: the Afghan government said it will soon seek new bids to mine one of the world’s richest iron ore areas after several companies withdraw the venture and some others have been disqualified by suspects of bribery and other forms of corruption.
The Hajigak deposit holds 1.8 billion tonnes of iron ore; a initial auction of its mining rights was held but no offers were accepted the Metallurgical Corp. of China Ltd. (MCC) and India's Sesa Goa were accused of corruption and have been disqualified by the government. Chinese and Indian companies are the most interested in the area as these companies desperately try to diversify their iron ore sources. A new auction will be held but no dates were given.
