A Florida court's decision
made Mosaic Co., the largest producer of Phosphate fertilizer in the world, to
review its plans for its Fort Meade mine. The ruling prevents the company from
expanding its operations into the neighboring county of Hardee.
Mosaic Co. reported that if
the decision is maintained, it must suspend operations and lay off 221 workers.
The Company filed an appeal.
About a third of the
company's phosphate extraction comes from Mosaic's South Fort Meade mines. The
closure of the unit can reduce the company's profits between 200 and 300 million
dollars and output by up to one million metric tons.
