Canada's First Quantum Minerals said it plans to restart output at Ravensthorpe nickel mine in Western Australia within 18 months, modifying the project and conducing further tests on it. The company expects to spend US$ 150 million reforming the deposit, which was shutdown by former owner BHP Billiton in January 2009 amid difficulties in developing the nickel laterite deposits and plunging prices of the metal.
Ravensthorpe cost about US$ 2.1 billion to build and employed 1,800 people when BHP closed the mine. It has a 32-year life.
