A natural gas pipeline explosion in southern Russia, reportedly ignited by explosives under the pipeline, left 214,000 people without gas in the troubled region of Dagestan. The affected structure is a local link held by Gazprom and does not have direct connections to foreign countries. A spokeswoman for the company could not immediately say how long it would take to repair the damaged pipeline.
There have been several bombings in Dagestan over the past year so the possibility of a criminal explosion is considered by the authorities.
