An explosion at a coalmine in Montcoal, West Virginia, killed 25 workers and poison gases blocked rescuers from resuming their search in the worst U.S. mining accident since 1984. Three deep holes are being drilled by the rescue team to vent methane and carbon monoxide from the deposit, but it will take until evening to get the first hole done – it has to bore about 300 meters of earth and rock. A total of 31 miners were in the project during a shift change when the blast happened, officials said. Eleven bodies had been recovered and identified, while other 14 are still inside the deposit.
