China’s National Development and Reform Commission approved on Monday a plan to develop a giant coal region in northwestern Gansu province. The Ningzheng mining region covers an area of 1,100 km² and has over seven billion tonnes of coal, which could be mined at a 20 million tonnes-rate per year.
Infrastructure such as coal conversion and logistics will also be developed. Part of the coal produced from the region will be transformed into other energy mode on site, while others will be transported through Xi'an-Pingliang railway to other regions.
