ArcelorMittal, BHP to team up for iron ore joint exploration?

Best friends forever? ArcelorMittal declared on Tuesday it is in talks with BHP Billiton to combine their iron ore assets in Guinea and Liberia, in a joint venture similar to the one celebrated by the British Australian miner with fellow Rio Tinto in Australia. The steelmaker claims that both companies' iron ore interests could be more competitive if brought together.
ArcelorMittal is currently readying its Liberian prospects to produce the first iron ore, expecting to commission it in 2011. The company aims to increase its self-sufficiency in iron ore, and the plan would certainly benefit from the new partnership.
