Russia's top diamond miner Alrosa signed this week three contracts with Indian companies on the delivery of uncut diamonds worth US$ 490 million. All the deals will last three years and were signed during the visit of prime minister and flamboyant dictator Vladimir Putin to India – the Russian government holds a controlling stake in the diamond producer.
Alrosa will supply uncut diamonds to Diamond India, Rosy Blue and Ratilal Becharlal & Sons. The company accounts for 25% of the global diamond output, and in 2009 produced gems worth US$ 2.2 billion.
