The recent batch of strikes in the mining sector have cost South Africa close to US$ 560 million in lost gold and platinum production, president Jacob Zuma declared Monday, speaking to a trade union congress in Johannesburg. Zuma also said mining companies are required to improve the housing and living conditions of workers and also to invest in skills development, racial equity in employment and ownership.
The president called for a fast resolution to the mining strikes and said he was afraid of violence becoming a culture of South African labor relations.
