Swiss mining giant Xstrata is planning to expand its Falcondo nickel mine in the Loma Miranda mineral province in the Dominican Republic. The area is being regarded as rich in gold and copper deposits, with several companies holding mining claims, such as Canada’s Santo Mining. The reported Xstrata reserves are an estimated 19 million tonnes of ore grading 1.62% nickel, a percentage above their current deposit grade of 1.5%.
