Brazilian mining giant Vale has been granted the environmental license for its flagship Salobo copper project in northern Pará state. Both federal and state authorities have issued the authorization to develop the open-pit deposit, which is set to produce 100,000 tonnes of copper concentrate a year when fully operating. Vale will spend US$ 2.5 billion in capital expenditures at Salobo, which is being built since 2007 and has its first production expected for early 2014.
