Home to some of the world’s biggest coal mines and some iron ore prospects, Ukraine is slowly diversifying its mining sector. Geology and Mineral Resources Secretary Eduard Stavyts'kyi said today that the country will have its first large-scale gold mining project commissioned late in the year. It will be explored by a state-run company and take place in the Kirovograd region.
According to Mr. Stavyts'kyi, the government decided to begin mining Ukraine's gold deposits by the radical growth of the world price of gold. The eastern European nation imports about five tonnes of gold per year and produces no gold of its own. Experts estimate Ukraine's gold resources at 400 tonnes in the Carpathian Mountains and 500 tonnes in the Donbass region.
