Spanish oil and gas tycoon Repsol has filed a suit at the World Bank’s arbitration tribunal seeking US$ 10.5 billion from Argentina for its expropriation of 51% of YPF in May. The European company calls the expropriation “a confiscation”, while the Argentinian government argues that under Repsol’s management, YPF was “hollowed out” with dividends sent abroad, and that investment and production at home waned.
Repsol has also promised legal action against any companies partnering with YPF to develop what it considers its assets.
