Platinum prices reached their highest mark since early May amid concerns about supply from South Africa, where worker unrest at the country's mines may be spreading in the wake of the Marikana massacre, in which 34 people died last week in clashes between police and unions. Since then, workers at companies such as Royal Bafokeng and Anglo American in the African nation began demanding higher wages and better labor conditions.
Spot platinum rose by as much as 1.5% today and peaked at US$ 1,524.49 an ounce.
