PetroChina, the state-owned firm, is discussing a joint venture with Royal Dutch Shell and U.S. oil developer Hess Corporation to explore shale oil in the Santanghu Basin in northwestern Xinjiang province, said CNPC, PetroChina’s parent company. The plan is a further demonstration of the Chinese interest in developing its shale deposits. The Asian nation has estimated reserves of 354 billion barrels of the fuel.
