Japanese trading house Marubeni has agreed to double its stake in Aluminerie Alouette, North America’s biggest aluminum smelter, to attend demand for the product. It would pay US$ 180 million to increase its share to 13.33%. The Quebec-based aluminium smelter has Rio Tinto Alcan and Norsk Hydro as its main owners. An expansion plan will grow the plant’s capacity to 930,000 tonnes in 2016 from about 600,000 tonnes in 2011 with investment cost of about US$ 2 billion.
