First Quantum halts operations at copper-gold deposit in Mauritania

First Quantum Minerals, the Canada-based company that goes for precious and base metals in Africa, has suspended operations at its Guelb Moghrein copper and gold mine project in Mauritania due to a strike by some of its unionized workers. A mediation process held by the government is trying to resolve the incident, which triggered clashes between Mauritanian security forces and demonstrators outside the mine that left one dead on Sunday.
